How to Install Aluminum Gutters
Installation of gutters is an important exercise in ensuring the proper working of a gutter system. Gutters which are not properly installed can be easily damaged or malfunction. Since the cost of gutters is fairly high, a proper installation is a requirement. I will go through the step by step installation of aluminum gutters.
1. Measure the length of fascia on the roof to determine the piece of gutter needed
2. Apply silicone caulker on the inner edges of the gutter end caps and stick them on each end of the gutter. Secure them with a crimping tool.
3. Cut the desired length of the gutter using a hacksaw and tin snips.
4. Fix the aluminum corner to the gutter using a caulker and aluminum pop rivets.
5. Take another gutter and attach the end cap then rivet it to the mitered corner to create an L-shaped gutter pattern.
6. Create a 3-inch hole on the gutter using a hole-saw then attach an outlet using a caulker and rivets.
7. Place the L-shaped gutter pattern on the house fascia.
8. Use a level to straighten the high-end of the gutter. Ensure that no edge of the gutter protrudes above the roof.
9. Place a gutter bracket into the higher end of the gutter and fix a screw through the bracket, fascia and into the rafter.
10. Adjust the gradient of the gutter to ensure it is sloping towards the downspout.
11. Continue step 9 throughout the length of the gutter.
12. Place two elbows on the upper part of the downspout and mount them using sheet metal screws.
13. Fix two aluminum wall brackets to the house corner boards.
14. Place the elbow on the high-end of the downspout over the outlet fitting from the gutter above.
15. The downspout will be mounted on the wall using metal screws driven through the wall brackets.
16. A trench should be dug on the lower end of the downspout to direct the water away from the house. You can fix an outlet pipe to drain the water.
17. On the end of drainpipe, attach an elbow and downspout fitting.
18. Slip the bottom end of the downspout into the rectangular downspout fitting attached to the end of the PVC drainpipe.
19. Place the drain pipe in the trench, and then cover it.
